The Anti-Defamation League (ADL) today welcomed the framework agreement between the United States and Russia to eliminate Syria’s cache of chemical weapons by 2014, calling it “an ambitious but hopeful first step” in ensuring that the regime will never again use chemical weapons against its civilian population or enable them to be used by others. The League said that “only the credible threat of force can bring about a diplomatic solution.”
No one should suggest Russia is persecuting or rounding up gays like the Nazis did with Jews (and homosexuals, among others). But it is obvious that Russia is oppressing the gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender community in a manner similar to the ways in which the Soviet Union once oppressed the Jewish community.
In response to a new national law in Russia prohibiting “propaganda of nontraditional sexual relations,” and fallout from the law’s passage that has brought about an upsurge in violence targeting gays and lesbians, the Anti-Defamation League (ADL) called on the United States to impose penalties if the Russian government does not “step backward on this issue of basic human rights.”
