Upon accepting the Ambassador for Humanity award from the USC Shoah Foundation, President Barack Obama stressed Wednesday the importance of providing care and assistance for Holocaust survivors living in need. The Jewish Federations of North America, which has led the effort to implement such programs, applauded the President’s speech and reaffirmed the organization’s commitment to raising funds in support of survivors.

The Anti-Defamation League (ADL) today welcomed the framework agreement between the United States and Russia to eliminate Syria’s cache of chemical weapons by 2014, calling it “an ambitious but hopeful first step” in ensuring that the regime will never again use chemical weapons against its civilian population or enable them to be used by others. The League said that “only the credible threat of force can bring about a diplomatic solution.”
No one should suggest Russia is persecuting or rounding up gays like the Nazis did with Jews (and homosexuals, among others). But it is obvious that Russia is oppressing the gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender community in a manner similar to the ways in which the Soviet Union once oppressed the Jewish community.
