Israeli President Shimon Peres to Speak at JFNA General Assembly

Innovative Program Will Allow General Public to Ask Questions through Social Media

New York – Israeli President Shimon Peres will speak next month at the General Assembly (GA) of The Jewish Federations of North America (JFNA) in Jerusalem. President Peres will be interviewed on stage, and participants at the event and around the world will have the opportunity to ask questions through President Peres’s Facebook page. President Peres’s on stage conversation will be live-streamed online, allowing everyone around the world to take part in this interactive experience.

During President Peres’s interview, JFNA will select a number of crowd-sourced questions that were submitted through an app on President Peres’s Facebook page launched especially for the GA. Links to the app will be circulated through all of the JFNA social media channels including the @JewishEvents twitter profile, the JFNA Facebook page, the GA website and the official GA app (available via I-Tunes and Android). Questions can be submitted through October 31.

In addition to President Peres, JFNA announced that Israeli Defense Minister Moshe Yaalon will join the growing list of illustrious Israeli and American leaders scheduled to join the assembly, including Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, Ministers Naftali Bennett, Yair Lapid and Gideon Sa’ar, opposition leader MK Shelley Yacimovich and other prominent leaders from Israel’s political, business and nonprofit worlds.

Bringing together over 2,000 influential decision-makers from communities across the United States, Canada, Israel and around the world, the GA inspires and engages current and emerging Jewish leaders, tackles the most critical issues of the day, and showcases the best of the Federation system. This year, the event will be held in Jerusalem to celebrate Israel’s 65th birthday and the pioneering partnership between the Federations and the State of Israel.

The GA is also a thriving virtual community, with over 10,000 tweets using the #JFNAGA hashtag in 2012 alone, as well as vibrant activity on Facebook and other social media channels. In addition to crowd-sourcing questions for President Peres, the GA will feature an unprecedented number of bloggers, a Twitter wall projecting live GA tweets and other social media.

The 2013 GA in Jerusalem will run Nov. 10-12, and feature an unprecedented array of global Jewish figures, thought leaders and programs that dig deeply into issues driving today’s headlines. In 24 sessions and plenaries featuring over 140 speakers, the GA will spark a wide-ranging debate about current issues, from the religious-secular divide and social protests in Israel to the recent PEW study on American Jewry and its implications for our global community. Capping the GA, participants will walk from Jerusalem’s City Hall to the Kotel, in a dramatic celebration of Jewish unity and celebration.
