NCJW Appalled at Congressional Inaction, Government Shutdown

September 30 2013, Washington, DC – In the wake of the latest breakdown in efforts to avoid a government shutdown, the National Council of Jewish Women (NCJW) expressed its dismay at Congress’ inability to pass a Continuing Resolution that prevents further sequestration, rejects efforts to defund the Affordable Care Act, and adequately funds services for those most vulnerable. NCJW CEO Nancy K. Kaufman released the following statement:

“With the clock about to run out on an agreement to avoid a government shutdown, NCJW is appalled by recent House efforts to defund the landmark Affordable Care Act and limit contraceptive coverage as both chambers attempted to reach agreement on a Continuing Resolution to fund federal agencies at the start of fiscal 2014 – today. Such efforts derail critical long-term deficit reduction negotiations that are essential to staving off unemployment and ensuring middle and lower-income families do not continue to shoulder the burden of funding cuts through cuts to safety net programs like Medicare, Medicaid, Social Security, and the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP).

“NCJW believes the nation’s economic recovery has only just begun, and a government shutdown will cause an already fragile system to spiral out of control – hurting those who need government programs and services the most. NCJW urges Congress to pass a Continuing Resolution that averts the sequester and avoids further shifting the fiscal burden to poor and working families who have already borne a disproportionate share of the nation’s economic pain in recent years. Securing new revenue should be a priority to meet deficit reduction goals; chart a more sustainable fiscal path forward; invest in the job creation measures our economy needs; and protect the programs and services upon which families and seniors depend.”

The National Council of Jewish Women (NCJW) is a grassroots organization of volunteers and advocates who turn progressive ideals into action. Inspired by Jewish values, NCJW strives for social justice by improving the quality of life for women, children, and families and by safeguarding individual rights and freedoms.
